Summer Session - Math

Pre-Algebra Regular - Grades 6-7

Most students enroll in the same math class that they will be taking in the Fall school year.

This Pre-algebra course will cover strategies to solve algebraic expressions using the distributive, commutative, transitive and equality properties. Beyond that, coordinate systems, ratios, proportions and metric conversions will be taught. Surface area, volume, and other geometry terms with geometric figures will be covered as well. This class assures incoming 6th and 7th graders a smooth and confident transition into the junior high math program. Note: Upon registration for this class, students will take a placement test.

Algebra I Regular

Most students enroll in the same math class that they will be taking in the Fall school year.

Algebra topics will be explained by demonstrating solutions and proper modeling of algebraic situations. Guided problem solving, question and answer sessions, as well as direct instruction, will make up each class period. Algebra will be covered with an emphasis on proper graphing techniques, along with factoring skills and word problem set-up. This class is geared toward advanced 7th graders, and 8th and 9th graders who want practice and advanced knowledge before school starts. Students must have completed pre algebra to make the most of this course.

Suitable for 7-8-9 graders who have successfully completed pre-algebra.

Algebra I Honors

Most students enroll in the same math class that they will be taking in the Fall school year.

Algebra 1 Honors begins with graphing and functions (Chapter 5 in Algebra 1 by Dolciani) and moves quickly through the chapters. Most students in this class will be incoming honors 8th graders and have had some algebra in 7th grade. A placement test will be given on the first class meeting to accurately assess what students really know. Guided problem solving, question and answer sessions, as well as direct instruction, will make up each class period.

Suitable for 7-8-9 graders who have successfully completed pre-algebra.

Algebra II Regular

This course is designed for students who will be taking an Algebra II regular course in the fall. We will cover Algebra II topics from the first semester, which include: solving equations, linear equations/functions, and systems of linear equations and graphing. Completion of this course will assure a confident and successful beginning to the school year. Current 10/11th graders who want review and practice before the SAT I Test will also find the course helpful and reinforcing.

Geometry Regular

Most students enroll in the same math class that they will be taking in the Fall school year.

This class will discuss the definitions, undefined terms, postulates and theorems of Euclidean Geometry. We will use the framework of Geometry to reinforce algebra skills using labeled diagrams and word problems. Students will be introduced to proofs by studying formal logic and proving the properties of Algebra. This tutorial is great preparation for students taking Geometry in the fall and should contribute to higher quiz scores and grades in a course very different from algebra!

Suitable for 8-9-10 graders who have been enrolled in the regular math track.

Geometry Honors

Most students enroll in the same math class that they will be taking in the Fall school year.

Most honors math classes expect students to know the basics. Honors classes become challenging when students are asked to put together multiple different perspectives and to attack a problem from more than one point of view (in other words to be able to brainstorm any problem). This course is designed to prepare students for their upcoming Fall Honors Geometry classes. Students will be introduced to many of the topics they will see during the first semester of a course studying Euclidean Geometry. This includes some basic definitions, theorems, and postulates. Students will learn to create useful diagrams and solve a variety of application problems. They will learn to create basic proofs and build up the confidence needed to tackle similar challenging problems, which they will encounter in the fall.

Suitable for 8-9-10 graders who have been enrolled in the honors math track.
