Opening
the Mill Creek Academy and meeting so
many fascinating people from around the
world has been a process. Mrs. Sabraw
began her teaching career student
teaching 1st grade. Since that time in
1971, she has taught junior high
English, high school English, and
English as a Second Language to adults
and high school students. She taught in
the significantly low economic area of
South Stockton, as well as in the rural
farming communities around Elk Grove and
the Central Valley, in addition to her
tenure in the suburban city of Fremont.
From tiny children to elderly people,
her students have played a significant
role in developing her educational
philosophy.
Mrs. Sabraw believes that the teacher is
at the core of the educational process.
With a kind, focused, disciplined, and
insightful teacher, students can learn
just about anything at any level. Of
course, other factors, such as parental
involvement and consistency, materials,
and classroom environment contribute to
the overall academic plate.
Since 1972 when she began teaching
English at American High School in
Fremont, Mrs. Sabraw has instructed over
3000 students, many of whom still keep
in touch with her. A sizable number of
her students decided to become English
teachers, the greatest compliment a
teacher can receive. A number of her
students are physicians from around the
globe now, a huge number are engineers,
some are artists, and many are
stay-at-home mothers.
The Mill Creek Academy is really an
extension of her love of knowledge,
students, and people.
Mrs. Sara Marek
Sara
Sabraw Marek, a Fremont native, is a graduate of Southern Methodist University
in Dallas, Texas, having received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a
minor in Political Science, in 1996. As a writing student, Mrs. Marek’s
persuasive essay about women in the military was selected for publication in "Criterion",
the SMU campus literary magazine.
Following graduation from college, Mrs. Marek worked in the Internet industry
for four years until her passion for teaching inspired a career change into
public education. Upon obtaining her California State Teaching Credential, Mrs.
Marek taught English for three years at Centerville Junior High School in
Fremont where she was voted one of the school’s four favorite teachers two years
in a row. Mrs. Marek was an advisor for Centerville’s Conflict Mediation
Program, where she helped students learn effective ways to communicate in order
to solve their problems. Mrs. Marek’s care and concern for each student’s
intellectual, emotional and social development help all of her students reach
their potential.
Mrs. Marek currently serves as
one of the Directors of Mill Creek Academy. In
addition to her administrative duties, Mrs. Marek continues to teach writing at
Mill Creek. She feels fortunate to have honed her teaching and business skills
under the watchful eye of her mother, Cheri Sabraw, founder of the Mill Creek
Academy.
In her free time, Mrs. Marek enjoys spending time with her wonderful husband and
son.
Mrs. Heather Richey

Heather Richey has been an
integral part of Mill Creek Academy since 1999. A popular and respected teacher
of middle and high school students, she has proven her ability to help them hone
their writing skills and increase their grammar knowledge. Many of her SAT
Writing students find her passion for English contagious and even report that
they found the SAT’s "easy" after taking her class. In fact, Mrs. Richey has
been credited not only with helping her students do better in school, but also
with helping them gain entrance into the nation’s top universities.
Mrs. Richey’s respect for and
love of language is anchored in her education: She earned her bachelor’s degree
in mass communication at CSU Hayward and her TESOL certificate from UC
Berkeley. Her extensive experiences in writing and in teaching others to speak
English combined in her to form a deep appreciation for the empowering nature of
language and an understanding that any idea we have -- be it small or grand --
is virtually useless if we cannot express it clearly to others. This belief
fuels her passion to help her students become the articulate adults today’s
world requires.
Along with being a
cornerstone of Mill Creek’s writing and SAT program, Mrs. Richey is also part of
the Mill Creek leadership team. A
long time Pleasanton resident, wife of a Foothill English teacher, and mother of
three, Mrs. Richey looks forward to extending Mill Creek’s quality programs to
the students in and around her own home town.
Ms. Joyce Wong
"Words
are single units, but together they astound the mind, increase creativity, and
bridge gaps." This philosophy is Ms. Wong's sole purpose for being an educator. She
believes in the power of language and desires to motivate and guide students
towards discovering the joy in learning. Energetic, passionate about literature,
and personable are qualities that Ms.
Wong is well-known for among her students. Ms.
Wong graduated from the University of California
Irvine where she received a double B.A. in English and Psychology, in addition
to a double minor in Education and Linguistics. Soon after, she decided to
obtain her Master's degree in Education at UC Berkeley. Ms.
Wong is now a teacher at
Mission San Jose High School where she teaches freshman honors English and
eleventh college prep English. In addition to teaching the academics, Ms.
Wong is also Mission’s Peer Counseling teacher. She holds a C.L.A.D.
(Cultural, Language, and Development) credential and is G.A.T.E certified.
During her teaching experience, Ms.
Wong has spent a great deal of her time
working with
students in the fourth to seventh grade level through Clinton 's Academic
Literacy Program. A side passion she has is writing children’s books for the
elementary school grades; in fact, she is currently in the process of publishing her
first book. In her free time, Ms.
Wong may be found glued to a game of
basketball, working on scrapbooking memories, or baking cookies. Ms.
Wong was named 2003 NUMMI New Promising Teacher of the Year for Fremont.
