Mr.
Sammy Obeid
Throughout his life, Sammy Obeid has possessed an intense passion for solving
problems. As much as he enjoys the
feeling of finding the solutions to his own questions, he just as greatly finds fun in helping others solve problems. He currently
tutors elementary, middle, and high school students in various areas of math, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. After 17
years of learning how to solve math problems at Gomes elementary, Hopkins Jr. High, Mission San Jose High, and the University of California at Berkeley's math department, he finds as much pleasure in teaching math to
younger students as he does in sharing laughter with them.
"The
Berkeley math department is no joke, however," he often remarks when he recalls the challenging environment in which he earned his bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Probability
Theory. While at Berkeley, he also earned a simultaneous degree in Business Administration from the Haas School of Business. As a Haas student, he
designed and taught the principles of business communication to both business and non-business students in a course that emphasized diversity in the workplace, managing conflicts within groups, and the fundamentals of effective public speaking. He has also lectured in seminars on topics in accounting, finance, and economical statistics, as well as workshops on impromptu speaking, tips for successful job hunting and interviewing,
résumé writing, mastery of Microsoft Office applications, introductory computer science, and more.
In 2005, he and a group of three other Berkeley students won Haas's 8th annual Goldman Sachs Investment Banking Case Competition, being the first team to ever use mathematical programming in their valuation analysis. Though most of his Berkeley peers have taken up careers as investment bankers and financial engineers, Sammy is currently finding his heart in teaching and tutoring others in his favorite disciplines: math, physical science, and music. He is very proud
of the fact that he, and each one of his students, has never earned less than an A in any the aforementioned subjects.
Mr. Obeid has been teaching at Mill Creek Academy for two years.
